1.Garbhadhanam
गर्भाधानम्The sacred act of conception · Before conception
The first samskara — a prayerful intention by the couple to invite a noble soul, performed with mantras that sanctify the very beginning of life.
षोडश संस्काराः
In the Vedic vision, life is not a sequence of events but a sacred unfolding. Sixteen samskaras — refinements — mark each passage, from before birth to beyond death. Find where you are in the journey.
Welcoming a soul

गर्भाधानम्
The sacred act of conception · Before conception
The first samskara — a prayerful intention by the couple to invite a noble soul, performed with mantras that sanctify the very beginning of life.
Nurturing the unborn · 3rd month of pregnancy
Performed for the healthy physical and mental development of the child in the womb, invoking strength and vitality.
Baby shower of the Vedas · 7th month of pregnancy
The mother is honoured and her mind kept joyful and serene — the child in the womb absorbs every emotion she experiences.
First light, first sound, first taste

जातकर्म
Birth rituals · At birth
The newborn is welcomed with mantras whispered in the ear and a taste of honey and ghee — the first taste of the sweetness of life.
Naming ceremony · 11th or 12th day
A name aligned with the child's birth star is given — a sound the child will hear thousands of times, chosen to uplift.
First outing · 4th month
The child is taken out to behold the sun and moon for the first time — a formal introduction to the cosmos.
First solid food · 6th month
The first morsel of food is offered as prasad — anna is Brahman, and the child's relationship with food begins with gratitude.
Shaping body and mind

चूडाकरणम्
First tonsure · 1st or 3rd year
The hair from birth is offered away, symbolising the shedding of past impressions and a fresh, sattvic beginning.
Ear piercing · 3rd or 5th year
An ancient practice rooted in the science of marma points, opening the inner ear to subtle sound and benefiting health.
Beginning of learning · 5th year
The child writes the first letter — often in a plate of rice — invoking Saraswati and Ganesha before formal education begins.
The student years

उपनयनम्
Sacred thread ceremony · 8th–12th year
The second birth — initiation into the Gayatri mantra and the life of a seeker. The thread reminds one of the responsibility to knowledge.
Beginning Vedic study · After Upanayanam
Formal study of the Vedas begins under a guru, anchoring the student in mantra, discipline and inquiry.
Graduation · End of studies
The ceremonial bath that concludes student life — the graduate returns to society carrying knowledge as a sacred trust.
Partnership and dharma

विवाहः
Vedic wedding · Marriage
Two lives are joined before Agni as witness — seven steps, seven vows, and a partnership in dharma, prosperity and moksha. VDS conducts authentic Vaidic Vivahas across India.
Completion and continuity

वानप्रस्थः · संन्यासः
Gradual retirement and renunciation · Later life
Turning from outer achievement to inner depth — a graceful handing over of responsibility and a deepening of sadhana.
The final offering · After death
The last samskara — the body is offered back to the five elements with the same reverence with which life was welcomed. Shraaddh, Pitru Tarpan and related Vaideeka Karya honour the departed and bless the lineage.
VDS conducts samskaras both as samoohik ceremonies — like group Upanayanams — and as private family rituals at your home.
