Annaprashanam

अन्नप्राशनम्

First solid food · 6th month

The story

At about six months, Annaprashanam celebrates the child's first taste of solid food. The first morsel — often sweetened rice — is offered as prasad amid chanting. Anna, food, is revered as Brahman itself; so the child's lifelong relationship with nourishment begins not with hunger, but with gratitude.

How it is done

Sweet rice is offered as the first solid food — prasad amid chanting and blessings.

Significance

The first morsel of food is offered as prasad — anna is Brahman, and the child's relationship with food begins with gratitude.
