How — The couple invokes the divine with sankalpa and mantras to conceive a noble soul.

The first samskara — a prayerful intention by the couple to invite a noble soul, performed with mantras that sanctify the very beginning of life.

Nurturing the unborn · 3rd month of pregnancy

How — In the third month, herbal drops and Vedic chants nourish the unborn child's vitality.

Performed for the healthy physical and mental development of the child in the womb, invoking strength and vitality.

Baby shower of the Vedas · 7th month of pregnancy

How — The husband parts the mother's hair to Veda mantras; elders bless mother and child.

The mother is honoured and her mind kept joyful and serene — the child in the womb absorbs every emotion she experiences.

How — The father whispers a mantra in the newborn's ear; honey and ghee touch the tongue.

The newborn is welcomed with mantras whispered in the ear and a taste of honey and ghee — the first taste of the sweetness of life.

Naming ceremony · 11th or 12th day

How — On the 11th–12th day, the nakshatra-aligned name is spoken into the child's ear.

A name aligned with the child's birth star is given — a sound the child will hear thousands of times, chosen to uplift.

First outing · 4th month

How — The infant is carried out to behold Surya and Chandra with protective mantras.

The child is taken out to behold the sun and moon for the first time — a formal introduction to the cosmos.

How — Sweet rice is offered as the first solid food — prasad amid chanting and blessings.

The first morsel of food is offered as prasad — anna is Brahman, and the child's relationship with food begins with gratitude.

How — The birth-hair is offered before the homa fire and the crown is sanctified.

The hair from birth is offered away, symbolising the shedding of past impressions and a fresh, sattvic beginning.

Ear piercing · 3rd or 5th year

How — The ear lobes are pierced at marma points with gold, to Vedic recitation.

An ancient practice rooted in the science of marma points, opening the inner ear to subtle sound and benefiting health.

Beginning of learning · 5th year

How — The child writes the first akshara in a plate of rice, invoking Ganesha and Saraswati.

The child writes the first letter — often in a plate of rice — invoking Saraswati and Ganesha before formal education begins.

How — The sacred thread is given before Agni and the guru imparts the Gayatri mantra.

The second birth — initiation into the Gayatri mantra and the life of a seeker. The thread reminds one of the responsibility to knowledge.

How — A ceremonial snana concludes studenthood; the graduate is honoured by society.

Gradual retirement and renunciation · Later life

How — Responsibilities are handed over and vows of withdrawal taken; sadhana becomes life.

Turning from outer achievement to inner depth — a graceful handing over of responsibility and a deepening of sadhana.

Antyeshti

अन्त्येष्टिः

The final offering · After death

How — The body is offered to Agni with mantras; tarpan and shraaddh honour the departed.

The last samskara — the body is offered back to the five elements with the same reverence with which life was welcomed. Shraaddh, Pitru Tarpan and related Vaideeka Karya honour the departed and bless the lineage.
