Gau Puja

Honouring the sacred cow · Gau Mata (Sacred Cow)

The Gau Puja is the worship of Gau Mata, the sacred cow revered in the Vedic tradition as the embodiment of selfless giving, nourishment and all the deities. It brings blessings, prosperity and merit (punya) to the worshipper.

Sacred Mantra

Om Gloum Gaam Gaumaatre Namah · Sarva Devamayi Gauh

What it feels like

To bathe and garland the gentle cow, to feed her by hand and circle her with a lamp — the Gau Puja is tenderness as worship. In her calm eyes the tradition beholds all the devatas, and in serving her, a quiet and lasting merit.

What happens inside the Gau Puja

Performed in the authentic VDS Vaidic paddhati — Sankalpa, Ganapati Puja, Kalasha Sthapana, Punyahavachanam, the consecration of Agni, the deity's offerings, and the final Purnahuti.
