About this ceremony

Sacred Mantra

Om Namah Shivaya · Namaste Rudra Manyava Utota Ishave Namah

What it feels like

As the Shivalinga is bathed in milk, honey and Ganga water and the Sri Rudram rolls in like distant thunder, the room goes very still. The Rudra Puja doesn't ask for your attention — it quietly takes it, and leaves behind the deep peace that Shiva-devotees have sought for millennia.

What happens inside the Rudra Puja

Performed in the authentic VDS Vaidic paddhati — Sankalpa, Ganapati Puja, Kalasha Sthapana, Punyahavachanam, the consecration of Agni, the deity's offerings, and the final Purnahuti.

  1. 1

    Sankalpa & Ganapati Puja

The intention is set and Ganapati invoked for a smooth ceremony.

  2. 2

    Kalasha & Shivalinga sthapana

The Shivalinga is installed and the sacred water pot consecrated.

  3. 3

    Rudrabhishekam

The Shivalinga is bathed with water, milk, honey, ghee, curd and bilva leaves while Sri Rudram (Namakam & Chamakam) is chanted.

  4. 4

    Archana & Aarti

Flowers and bilva are offered with the 108 (or 1008) names of Shiva, followed by the waving of lamps.

  5. 5

    Prasad & blessings

Sanctified water and vibhuti are distributed to all participants.

Significance

Sri Rudram describes the Divine as present in all of creation. Its chanting harmonises the individual with the cosmos, dissolving inner and outer obstacles. The Rudra Puja is performed to remove planetary doshas, clear negative impressions, and invite health, harmony and prosperity. It is the heart of the Shravan Maas observances.

Benefits

  • Removes negativity and planetary doshas
  • Purifies body and mind
  • Bestows peace, health and prosperity
  • Deepens devotion and inner steadiness

Best time to perform

Mondays, Pradosham, Maha Shivratri and through Shravan Maas.
