About this ceremony

Sacred Mantra

Om Glam Glaum Gam Ganapataye Namah

What it feels like

Before anything new can begin, Ganesha is called first. Modakas and soft durva grass are offered to the flames, and you can almost feel the obstacles — the worry, the hesitation — being gently swept aside, the road ahead suddenly lighter and open.

What happens inside the Ganapati Homa

Performed in the authentic VDS Vaidic paddhati — Sankalpa, Ganapati Puja, Kalasha Sthapana, Punyahavachanam, the consecration of Agni, the deity's offerings, and the final Purnahuti.

  1. 1

    Sankalpa

The intention for the new venture is declared with the names and gotra of the family.

  2. 2

    Ganapati invocation

Ganesha is invoked into an idol or kalasha and worshipped with the 108 names (Ashtottara).

  3. 3

    Modaka & Durva offerings

His favourite offerings — modaka and durva grass — are presented.

  4. 4

    Homa

Ghee and havan samagri are offered into Agni with the Ganapati mantra for each oblation.

  5. 5

    Purnahuti & Aarti

The final offering and lamp-waving complete the homa.

Significance

No Vedic ceremony begins without first honouring Ganesha. As Vighnaharta, he clears the seen and unseen obstacles that obstruct success. Performing the Ganapati Homa at the start of an endeavour aligns it with auspicious energies and steadies the mind for the work ahead.

Benefits

  • Removes obstacles in business, education and life
  • Bestows success in new ventures
  • Grants wisdom and clarity
  • An auspicious start to any undertaking

Best time to perform

Before any new venture, on Chaturthi, or Ganesha Chaturthi.
