Samskara 2 of 16 · Before Birth
Pumsavanam
पुंसवनम्
Nurturing the unborn · 3rd month of pregnancy
The story
As the child takes form in the womb, Pumsavana is performed in the third month for the healthy growth and vitality of the unborn. Vedic seers understood that the womb is the child's first world — and so herbs, mantras and a serene environment are offered to nourish body and spirit alike, long before the first breath.
How it is done
In the third month, herbal drops and Vedic chants nourish the unborn child's vitality.
Significance
Performed for the healthy physical and mental development of the child in the womb, invoking strength and vitality.
