About this ceremony

Sacred Mantra

Om Gloum Gaam Gaumaatre Namah · Sarva Devamayi Gauh

What it feels like

To bathe and garland the gentle cow, to feed her by hand and circle her with a lamp — the Gau Puja is tenderness as worship. In her calm eyes the tradition beholds all the devatas, and in serving her, a quiet and lasting merit.

What happens inside the Gau Puja

Performed in the authentic VDS Vaidic paddhati — Sankalpa, Ganapati Puja, Kalasha Sthapana, Punyahavachanam, the consecration of Agni, the deity's offerings, and the final Purnahuti.

  1. 1

    Sankalpa

    Intention and reverence are offered.

  2. 2

    Bathing & adorning the cow

The cow is bathed, decorated with turmeric, kumkum and garlands.

  3. 3

    Archana

The cow is worshipped with mantras honouring the 33 crore devatas said to reside in her.

  4. 4

    Feeding (Gau Grass)

Fresh fodder and jaggery are offered to the cow.

  5. 5

    Aarti & pradakshina

Lamps are waved and the cow circumambulated with devotion.

Significance

In the Vedas, the cow is honoured as Gau Mata — the giver of milk, the sustainer of agriculture and a symbol of ahimsa. Worshipping and serving the cow is considered among the highest forms of seva, bringing prosperity, health and spiritual merit to the household and the land.

Benefits

  • Blessings and spiritual merit (punya)
  • Prosperity and abundance in the home
  • Expression of ahimsa and gratitude
  • Supports the care of indigenous cows

Best time to perform
